CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS

Join the Christmas Bird Count with Eastern Sierra Bird Alliance

Every December, birders across the country take part in the longest-running community science project in the world—the Christmas Bird Count (CBC), led by the National Audubon Society. For over a century, this annual event has helped track the health and status of bird populations throughout the Americas, providing critical data for conservation.

Here in the Eastern Sierra, the Eastern Sierra Bird Alliance proudly organizes three local Christmas Bird Counts in the communities of Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, and Lee Vining. Each count is a full-day effort to identify and count every bird seen or heard within a designated 15-mile diameter circle. Whether you're an experienced birder or just getting started, the CBC is a fun, meaningful way to connect with nature and contribute to bird conservation.

We welcome birders of all skill levels to participate!

To learn more or sign up for one of our December counts, please contact us at info@easternsierrabirds.org and we’ll help get you involved.

We also maintain a rich archive of past Christmas Bird Count results for the Eastern Sierra, dating back to 1994. If you're curious about historical trends or want to see what species have been recorded over the years, contact us and we’ll be happy to share the data with you.

Let’s make every bird count—literally!
